Azawi fans from Uganda and the whole East Africa region mark the 9th of October 2023 as a special date. Azawi – born Priscilla Zawedde on the 2nd February 1996 -, is a Ugandan singer, songwriter and dancer signed by Swangz Avenue. Her musical genre – Afro-luganda – is unique as she mixes both Luganda and English making her stand out when it comes to female musicians in East Africa. Her career began as a dancer in 2005 in a group called Kika Dance Troupe before joining Crane performers in 2009. As a song writer she started writing songs at an early age as a hobby until when her songwriting skills got her a meeting with Eddy Kenzo who eventually connected her to other artistes. She has written for artistes like Nina Rose, Lydia Jazmine, Carol Nantongo, Vinka, and Eddy Kenzo. Her breakthrough came in January 2020 after releasing her first single titled “Quinamino” under Swangz Avenue Label where she was signed to in August 2019.
After her last album release and the release of her trendy hit “Ten Over Ten”, Azawi is yet again causing a stir among her fans and followers with some exciting news. This time round she took it on her social pages officially announcing her upcoming album titled “Sankofa”. “Sankofa” is a word which relates to the act of looking back at the past to shape the future and this has had many talking and excited patiently waiting to see what the project will have to offer. Azawi promises that the album will be thoughtfully curated and the tracks will make it a work of art, a blend of melodies and a stories telling experience. Over the spread of her career, Azawi has shown her incredible ability to collaborate with other stakeholders in the music industry and many anticipates different collaborations both with international and local musicians, composers, and producers on “Sankofa” as all these contributors are expected to bring their “A” game when it comes to creativity of the album’s diverse tapestry.
“Sankofa” surely promises to follow in the footsteps of Azawi’s previous major releases, aligning with a tradition she has established. In a move that reflects her dedication to her craft, Azawi has plans for an exclusive private listening party to share her creation with a select audience first before releasing her masterpiece to the world.
