Kenyan content creators have all the reasons to smile as the President – William Ruto – announced that Facebook and Instagram parent company, Meta, has agreed to start monetization of content in Kenya following successful talks led by the government. In 2018, Facebook rolled out – Ad Breaks – a feature that allows video creators monetize their content from advertising. The feature, which was first made available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, the UK, the US now in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and soon Kenya helps video creators and publishers earn money by placing short ads in their video content.
Speaking on Tuesday 12th December, 2023, during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi, the President said that he had spoken with Meta and the company has agreed to let content creators to monetize their content which will now enable content creators to earn a living by producing original content on Facebook and Instagram. He also revealed that Meta had run a pilot program with eligible Kenyan content creators and now Meta will be expanding monetization opportunities to all content creators in the country allowing them to earn a living doing what they love.

According to the latest data released by parent company Meta, as of Q3 2023, the number of Facebook users worldwide is 3.05 billion and this number is as a result of a steady growth in the use of the app after its launch in 2004. Instagram on the other hand bosses up to 1.35 billion users worldwide and this number is also as a result of a steady growth of the app since its launched on Oct. 6, 2010. These numbers are just evidence that these platforms by Meta posses a huge advertising market for service and goods providers and an income channel to the users and account holders.
When launched, accounts of eligible content creators will be able to show different types of Meta ads depending on the advertising objective which will affect the placements of the ads (Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and Meta Audience Network).
