Genes1s – known professionally – is a musical performing artist, recording artist and songwriter based in Kilimani Nairobi Kenya. Born Joel Kimani on Thursday 4th March 2004 in Matter Hospital Nairobi, Genes1s is working hard to evolve, revolutionize and change the Kenyan sound by working and helping as many people as he can in the music and craft industry.
Genes1s joined Riara Primary in 2010 to kickstart his education journey. He graduated with a Kenyan Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 2017 after 8 years of primary education. In January 2018, Genes1s joined Nova Secondary School where after 2 years – in January 2020 – he was transferred to Saint Mary’s Secondary School where he graduated with a Kenya Certificated of Secondary Education (KCSE) after 4 years of secondary education. In 2022, Genes1s furthered his quest for tertiary education by joining Strathmore University in Nairobi.
Genes1s grew up in a music loving family and this laid a good foundation for his love of music, but it was till primary school when him and fellow pupils would start rapping and freestyling in class using beats generated by hitting their desks in a rhythmic pattern. In secondary school, Genes1s joined poetry club, during the club’s meeting Genes1s pinpoints the intricated flow patterns and rhyme schemes made during several sessions which fascinated him and made him enjoy the club and the structure of poetry which is a crucial composition of music.
Combining the above experiences – both in primary and secondary schools – and the fact that he grew up in a musical loving family – his mother loved listening to tapes from the R&B greats Celine Dion and Boyz II Men – increased his urge of doing music. Genes1s had a deep connection to art. After listening to Eminem’s “Not Afraid” for the first time when it was released while he was still in primary school, Genes1s developed this deep drive for hip hop and rap as a genre of music.
Drawing his inspiration from the late Xxxtentacion, Nyanshinski, Camp Mulla’s Taio Tripper, Rema, Eminem, Kahush, 21 Savage and Burna Boy, Genes1s has various projects that have received positive reactions and have caught attention of the Kenyan, African and world music market. His songs cut across the different musical genres such as Hip hop, Alternative, Trap, Afro, Lofi and even R&B. Everyday life experiences is what influences Genes1s’s pen game and for a fact this has been evident in his released projects.
Discography
The year was 2020 when Genes1s made his official commercial music industry debut after releasing his first single “I’m Not fine”, which according to him it was recorded by a phone, produced by Stazor and put out only on SoundCloud and YouTube. He followed up by releasing his second song “Leave Me Alone” featuring Durt which was produced by Jkinyanzui, third song was titled “254” and fourth song “Nice Guy” featuring Trevor Koin and Kxffy before releasing his first video on 9th October 2020 entitled “My Stress” which was directed by Trevor Chege.
Genes1s followed up with more singles, songs, videos and collaborations in the build up to his debut album. He is a collaborative artist and loves working with all types of artists to enhance his creative field.
On June 3rd, 2022, Genes1s released his first album titled Journey (available now on all digital streaming platforms). The album had twelve tracks out of which five of them were collaborations featuring Korb$, $abi Wu, Kanzu, Jerome Ke, and Razor Man.

For a debut album this was the best announcement of Genes1s into the music scene and its success projected Genes1s into another spectrum as he went to start cooking his second album.
On 3rd June 2023 as part of marking the anniversary of his first album “Journey”, Genes1s released his second album titled “Moments”(available now on all digital streaming platforms). The album had fourteen tracks with ten features namely Prxnce, Korb$, Lil Maina, Ouma wa Mafegi, Mi$sta K, Kig$, Timmy Blanco, Razor Man, Pete XM and Juanita.

Genes1s is a visionary and his future in music is well calibrated. Genes1s is working on an EP titled “Almost There”, which will be something light but fun for he feels like he has been taking his prior projects too seriously. After the EP Genes1s promises yet another album to be titled “Destination” which according to him, it will be the biggest thing he has ever done yet. Genes1s is also in the process of building a record label, an entertainment company called “New Wave Entrainment” and clothing brand. Genes1s is an artist to watch out for in the coming years for he promises to keep his foot down on the music pedal and continue entertaining the masses with his message enriched releases.
