Kenya’s Hellen Obiri wins New York City Marathon

 

 

The New York City Marathon is the final of the six Marathon Majors of the 2023 season. The event took place on the 5th of November, 2023, in New York City – USA – bringing together elite runners from all around the world. Kenya’s Albert Korir was considered a favorite in the men’s category after finishing second in the same event with a time of 2:08:36 in November 2019. Korir won the 2021 New York City Marathon with a time of 2:08:22 in November 2021. In the women’s category Kenya’s Hellen Obiri was expected to face stiff competition from Ethiopia’s Letessenbet Gidey and fellow countrywomen Brigid Kosgei and Edna Kiplagat.

 

However, in the men’s category, Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia emerged the winner after a time of 2:04:58 beating Kenya’s Albert Korir who came in second with a time of 2:06:57 almost three minutes apart. Shura Kitata of Ethiopia came in third with a time of 2:07:11. Hellen Obiri of Kenya won the women’s category with a time of 2:27:23 just 6 seconds ahead of Ethiopia’s Latessenbet Gidey who came in second. Sharon Lokedi of kenya came in third with a time of 2:27:33. Brigid Kosgei, Mary Ngugi, Viola Cheptoo, Edna Kiplagat all from Kenya came in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

The New York City Marathon is an annual marathon (42.195 km) that courses through the five boroughs of New York City. It is the largest marathon in the world with 53,627 finishers in 2019 and 98,247 applicants for the 2017 race. It is among the pre-eminent long-distance annual running events in the United States and is one of the World Marathon Majors. The race is organized by New York Road Runners and has been run every year since 1970, with the exception of 2012, when it was cancelled due to the landfall of Hurricane Sandy, and 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The race is held on the first Sunday of November and attracts professional competitors and amateurs from all over the world
