Born Bill Sellanga but known professionally as Blinky Bill, he is a Kenyan producer/artist and DJ based in Nairobi. He is the lead vocalist/songwriter in Kenya’s most groundbreaking alternate act Just A Band. As a solo artist he has 2 albums now and 1 EP, “We Cut Keys 2″, “We Cut Keys While You Wait” and “Everyone’s Just Winging IT And Other Fly Tales”. In 2017 Blinky Bill released his debut EP as a solo artist “We Cut Keys While You Wait” after earlier that year, Just A Band had announced that they’d be going on hiatus to concentrate on individual projects. The EP had 5 tracks and it saw Blinky Bill experimenting with different shades of dance beats and all kinds of synthesizer noises.
Bien releases a much anticipated Debut album.
The EP was a precursor to his debut album which was released in 2018 – ‘‘Everyone’s Just Winging It And Other Fly Tales’’. The title expresses the idea that human beings float through life doing their best – sometimes succeeding, failing – and that our existences have their share of upsets.
On the 26th of January 2024, Blinky Bill released his long-awaited third studio album “We Cut Keys 2″. The album sees Blinky Bill continue to push the envelope once again when it comes to production, songwriting, and collaborations. Blinky Bill also continues to showcase the exploratory and experimental nature of his previous projects while tapping into traditional tribal drum sounds, electronic music, hip hop, and jazz and captures a variety of themes.
Describing the creative process behind some of the songs in the album, Blinky Bill said he has always wanted to make talk box tunes and this was his opportunity to do so, as inspired by his favorites Stevie Wonder, Daft Punk, and also a lot of African music that explores that sound.
